SSRS to Power BI Migration

Move your SQL Server Reporting Services estate to Power BI. RDL reports migrate to Power BI Report Builder, operational reporting becomes interactive dashboards, and Report Server infrastructure retires.

SSRS receives no meaningful feature investment. Microsoft's roadmap is Power BI: paginated reports run natively in the Power BI Service, and Report Server workloads are consolidating into Fabric.

Migration Outcomes

NativeRDL support in Power BI Service
50-70%Less manual report maintenance
1 ModelShared semantic layer replacing per-report queries
0Report Server infrastructure to patch
Why Organizations Leave SSRS

The cost of staying on SSRS

Stagnant platform
SSRS gets maintenance updates only. New capability investment goes to Power BI and Fabric.
Server overhead
Patching, scaling, and securing Report Server instances for a workload Power BI hosts natively.
Per-report queries
Hundreds of RDLs each with embedded SQL. One schema change breaks dozens of reports.
No interactivity
Static parameterized reports where the business now expects drillable dashboards.
Subscription sprawl
Email subscriptions nobody audits, delivering reports nobody reads.
Skill drain
SSRS expertise is retiring out of the market while Power BI talent is everywhere.
Migration Mapping

Everything in SSRS has a modern equivalent

Every component of your SSRS estate maps to Power BI and Microsoft Fabric. Nothing is left behind, and everything is validated against the original.

Shared data sources and datasets
Certified semantic models and dataflows
Report Server folders and security
Power BI workspaces and row-level security
Email subscriptions
Power BI subscriptions and Power Automate
Linked reports and parameters
Drillthrough, bookmarks, and cascading parameters

How We Migrate

A proven 5-stage framework

The same structured methodology behind 1,200+ migrated reports. Validated side by side, documented, and delivered with zero disruption.

1

Assess

Inventory every report, data source, and dependency. Usage analysis identifies what actually matters.

2

Rationalize

Retire duplicates and unused reports. Typically 30 to 50 percent never need migrating.

3

Modernize

Rebuild on Power BI and Fabric with governed semantic models and validated outputs.

4

Govern

Workspaces, row-level security, certified datasets, and documented standards.

5

Enable

Training and handover so your team owns the platform, not a vendor.

Common Questions

SSRS migration FAQ

Do SSRS reports migrate directly to Power BI?

Largely yes. Power BI paginated reports use the same RDL format as SSRS, so many reports migrate with minimal rework. Data sources, authentication, and expressions are updated and each report is validated against the original.

Is SSRS being discontinued?

SSRS remains supported but receives maintenance-level investment only. SQL Server 2022 is the last standalone SSRS release announced, and Microsoft's investment is in Power BI paginated reports and Fabric. Migration is a when, not an if.

What license do we need for paginated reports?

Paginated reports run in Power BI Pro workspaces as of 2023, no longer requiring Premium capacity. We advise on the most cost-effective licensing for your estate during assessment.

Should every SSRS report become a dashboard?

No. Operational and print-ready reports stay paginated; analytical reports are candidates for interactive Power BI dashboards. Rationalization sorts your estate into migrate-as-is, redesign, consolidate, and retire.

Can we retire our Report Server?

Yes. Once reports, subscriptions, and security migrate to the Power BI Service, Report Server instances are decommissioned, removing the patching and infrastructure burden.
